High-Tech Performance and Nutrition Apps

Gone are the days when all you could do with a wearable fitness tracker was determine how many steps you took each day. Now, they’re so high-tech that they can integrate with other apps and technologies and enable fitness enthusiasts and athletes to view nutrition and diet recommendations and track micro- and macronutrients, body hydration, calorie intake, and even electrolyte and stress levels.

In this month’s E-News Exclusive, Today’s Dietitian (TD) discusses the popularity of wearable fitness trackers and their technological advances that are all the rage among avid exercisers—great info to share with clients.

Performance Nutrition and Wearable Trackers

In 2016, wearable fitness trackers debuted as the No. 1 trend on the American College of Sports Medicine’s (ACSM) list of top 20 fitness trends. Wearables held the top spot on the ACSM’s list in 2017, 2019, and 2020, were third in 2018, and came in second in 2021. As fitness tracker technology has advanced, they’ve remained consistently popular within the fitness industry and with consumers and are projected to be a $3 billion-plus market by 2022. Evolving far beyond their initial daily step-counting function, capabilities have expanded substantially to include such features as heart rate monitoring and nutrition tracking, making wearable technology even more attractive to athletes and vigorous exercisers.

Nutrition functions aren’t yet fully integrated in trackers as other features are, and most current fitness trackers require use of a smartphone to interface with their own or another mobile nutrition app. Wearable integration with nutrition apps are intended to replace manual food diaries. Fitbit, one of the most popular and recognized trackers, has a nutrition function that allows logging of meals, snacks, and water to track hydration, daily calories, and macronutrients. Macronutrient tracking can aid in recovery following endurance training and vigorous sports activities.

Positive Self-Image May Protect Against Adolescent Weight Gain

A new study from the University of Bergen in Norway suggests that the way young people view their bodies has a significant impact on their BMI.

In a two-year follow-up study among 1,225 Norwegian adolescents in their early teens, Eivind Meland, MD, PhD, a professor in the department of global public health and primary care at the University of Bergen, and his team examined how BMI, self-esteem, and self-rated health were mutually impacted and influenced by body dissatisfaction.

“We revealed that positive self-image and self-esteem protected against weight gain,” Meland says.

In general, the girls had lower body confidence than boys. Dieting, wanting to be thinner, and wanting to change one’s body all impaired self-rated health and self-esteem during and after the two years’ observation. Interestingly, the intention to gain weight was associated with lower weight, and a desire to lose weight was associated with body mass gain as compared with peers who were content with their body.

“We conclude that health-promotive efforts in adolescence should be based on self- and body-acceptance,” Meland says.

Create Memorable Client Handouts

When I was a dietetics intern, one of my missions was to grab a copy of every nutrition education handout I could find during my internship. I was determined to one day learn how to create my own handouts to educate clients about hot topics in nutrition, such as the newest cooking trends or the truths about a popular fad diet. By the end of my internship, I had two manilla folders stuffed with handouts. And although many of them were creatively designed, there were a few that were simply memorable. These handouts illustrated the following three easy tips I’ve embraced to develop dynamic patient handouts on numerous nutrition topics for inpatient and outpatient clinics.

1. Keep It Short and Sweet
This tip can be challenging to follow since dietitians often want to provide as much information as possible to clients. Yet, too much information on a handout can be overwhelming. To solve this problem, there are two simple rules to keep bullet points and paragraphs succinct.

Bullet points summarize a main idea, so don’t turn them into paragraphs. Try the Seven-by-Seven Rule: Use no more than seven words per line for a bullet point and no more than seven lines per bullet point. You’re more likely to engage clients without losing their interest too quickly.
